17. WOODEN DOORS
I am a woodworker’s son but sadly no woodworker, be it in 1:1 or 1:56th scale. Still, I wanted to transfer the colorful door design from cardboard to wood. So I dug out a piece of BALSA and my old wooden box of X-Acto knives and gave it a go…
(the sharp-eyed among you will notice I took a big shortcut by gluing the angled balsa wood planks to a piece of black plastic hobby sheet which I’d cut to size with a pair of scissors)
Instead of going for the full blast red-orange frame, I went with just a hint of red-orange to compliment the blue & yellow chevrons…
18. BASTION PAINTING
Despite how nice their fortress is turning out, these two just can’t seem to get along…
Walls so big they can’t even fit on the table anymore!?!?
19. BASTION REPAIR
Not sure if you could really see it in any of the previous gazillion pics, but the base of the first Bastion, the old style one made from polyurethane hard foam, had a pretty bad molding imperfection under the door. After being nagged by it for a month or more, I decided to try and make it go away with a dash of wood putty…
Of course it would have been much smarter & better if I’d made that decision BEFORE painting it!
But it still seemed to work out okay…
Hmmm. Now we’re sticking out BOTH ENDS OF THE TABLE???
Guard duty mounted at new-&-improved front doors…
All the INSET OPEN DOORWAYS were painted with FolkArt WROUGHT IRON — a super dark green…
Did someone say, “weathering wash”…….?????
Presto, the Bastion looks like it’s endured some wear-and-tear…
The first of the three relatively massive components of the fortress is done…
YAY!!!
Just two more to go.
20. BASTION #2
As usual, follow the red brick road…
As usual, follow the red brick road…
Then toss in some grey stonework…
From time to time during a big terrain project I’ll lift my morale by pausing to set up some figures down atop the unfinished but hopefully still good looking table…
AWI Queen’s Rangers advancing to attack Fort Miflin… or reinforce Fort Ticonderoga…
(Please don’t ask where the respective water features are!)
Looks like they were reinforcing Ticonderoga after all, since there appear to be Royal Artillery guns & crews up on the ramparts…
NEXT UP in Chapter VI: Bastion #2 is completed; we attempt the massive RAVELIN; and the BREACH remains perplexing…
